yeah this film was a banger. visually stunning. i loved how dizzying it was when thomas was in orlok's castle. i DO think some of the stuff in this film was a little funny ('my good fellow, why would you you do that?') but i can proudly say i did not laugh out loud. i think dafoe might have cemented himself as my favourite actor with this film. as for themes, very solidly 'desire' - "i am an appetite".

this is the third of kon's films i've watched. i think this is my second favourite so far, behind perfect blue and ahead of paprika. there's stunningly beautiful imagery in this film. parts that made me teary and parts that made me laugh out loud. i loved the characters a lot. i think hana as a character is potentially hard to stomach for a modern audience - i'd certaintly forewarn people about her before watching. but despite that, i really loved her. i especially loved the family she had at angel tower. hoping to make this a christmas tradition.

it's been a little while between when i watched it and now, writing this (20th jan 2025). i think it was an incredible film and i did find myself profoundly affected by it. my favourite scene in particular was maddy's monologue.
